|FROM: Policy on Student Registration1. All midwifery students in Alberta must be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta in order to undertake any part of their educational experience in the province. Student membership entitles the person to perform the authorized practices comprising the clinical practice of midwifery under the supervision of a qualified supervisor.
2. To qualify as a student a person must be:
a. enrolled in a midwifery undergraduate program or a midwifery bridging program approved by the Health Disciplines Board
b. enrolled in a midwifery undergraduate program or a midwifery bridging program that has been accepted for assessment for approval or
c. enrolled in a midwifery education program for indigenous people in the Canadian North. This will be dealt with on a case by case basis by the College.
Canadian Education Qualifications:
An applicant must:
a) have successfully completed an approved program of midwifery studies,
Approved program means educational programs approved by the Health Disciplines Board. As of September 2014, there are several Canadian midwifery programs that have been approved. These include programs at University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Ryerson University and Laurentian University (Ontario) and Universite de Trois-Rivieres (Quebec) and Mount Royal University( Calgary).
b) have successfully completed practice requirements as set out in section 2.2,
c) have successfully completed the approved examinations,
i) completed the above requirements within two years of application, or
ii) completed an approved refresher program within one year of application
e) hold valid certification in neonatal resuscitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, managing obstetrical emergencies and Fetal Health Surveillance.

The next CMRE exams are typically scheduled for May and October each year. To ensure registration is at the CMRC by their Registration deadlines (check CMRC website) Registration and payment MUST be received at the CMA office no later than the Tuesday prior to the CMRC deadline.
